Golden Hour Family Photography on Auckland’s West Coast - Muriwai Beach
There’s something about Auckland’s West Coast beaches that keeps drawing me back, time and time again. The combination of dramatic black sand, rugged volcanic rock, and the sound of crashing waves in the distance makes it one of the most breathtaking places for family photography. It’s raw, wild, and yet incredibly peaceful — the perfect backdrop for natural, heartfelt moments.
Why West Coast Beaches are Perfect for Family Photography
When families ask me why I love shooting out west, my answer is simple: no two sessions ever look the same. The coastline changes constantly — the tide, the clouds, the colour of the light — which means every photoshoot feels unique. Whether it’s Piha, Muriwai, or Bethells Beach, these locations give families a chance to relax, explore, and create memories together while I capture them naturally.
The Magic of Sunset (Golden Hour)
I often get asked about the best time of day for photography sessions. Technically, you can shoot any time, but golden hour — about an hour before sunset — is something truly special. The light is softer, warmer, and it adds this incredible glow that makes skin tones look beautiful and the whole scene feel almost cinematic. It might sound funny to be so excited about light, but it really does transform photos into something extraordinary.
Flexible Options for Families
Of course, not every family can shoot at sunset — with little ones’ bedtimes or busy schedules, sometimes earlier in the day is more practical. I always do my best to accommodate this, and we can still create beautiful images. But if we can make sunset work, it’s always worth it. That golden glow is something you’ll treasure forever when you look back at your family photos.
Every time I drive home from a West Coast session, I feel so grateful that this wild, dramatic coastline is right on Auckland’s doorstep. If you’re thinking about booking a family photoshoot, I’d love to help you experience the magic of this place too.
