Best Beaches in Auckland for Family Photography

There’s something magical about family photos at the beach. Maybe it’s the way kids can run barefoot in the sand, or how the light bounces off the water at sunset. Whatever it is, Auckland’s coastline makes it one of the most beautiful backdrops for family photography in New Zealand.

One of my favourite spots is Orewa Beach. It’s iconic for a reason—the wide sandy stretch gives kids room to play, and the views of Hauraki Gulf are the perfect natural backdrop. It’s also easy to access, which is a huge bonus if you’ve got little ones or grandparents joining the session. You’ll often have more space to yourselves here, which means photos feel more intimate and personal.

If you’re looking for something a little more wild, Muriwai Beach has a more dramatic feel and some of the best golden hour light in the city. As the sun sets, the whole beach glows, and it makes for photos that feel warm and timeless.

For something closer to the city, Narrow Neck is a great option but it does get quite busy especially in summer.

Of course, beaches aren’t just about the sand and water—they’re about how your family interacts there. Kids building sandcastles, parents walking hand-in-hand, splashing in the shallows—it’s those in-between moments that make beach sessions so special.

If you’re thinking about a family photo session in Auckland, the beach is always a good idea. Whether you go for iconic, relaxed, or hidden, the ocean has a way of bringing out the best in families.
