How to Prepare Your Kids for a Family Photography Session
If you’ve ever worried that your kids might not “cooperate” during a photo session, you’re not alone. Almost every parent I work with has the same concern, but the good news is that kids don’t have to sit still or smile on command for us to create beautiful family photos.
The best thing you can do before a session is to set the tone. Tell your kids that this isn’t about stiff posing or having to smile to the camera, it’s about playing, laughing, and spending time together. When they know it’s fun and relaxed, they’ll be more open to the experience.
It also helps to bring along a few comfort items. Snacks, water, and maybe a favourite toy can go a long way in keeping kids happy.
Another tip is to keep expectations flexible. Some kids need to warm up before they’re comfortable, and that’s completely fine. I usually start sessions with walking or playing activities so kids can relax without pressure. Often the most genuine smiles come when they’ve forgotten the camera is even there.
And finally, don’t stress. If your kids are shy, silly, or full of energy, that’s exactly who they are right now, and that’s worth capturing. The goal isn’t perfect behaviour; it’s authentic memories.
