What to Wear for Family Photos in Auckland

One of the first questions families ask me is: “What should we wear?” And it’s a great question, because what you wear can really shape the look and feel of your photos.

A good rule of thumb is to coordinate, not match. Instead of everyone in identical white shirts and jeans, try choosing a colour palette—soft neutrals, pastels, or earthy tones work beautifully against Auckland’s natural backdrops. Think creams, light blues, muted greens, or sandy beiges.

Comfort is just as important as style. Kids should be able to run, jump, and play without worrying about their clothes. Parents too—if you’re constantly adjusting or feel uncomfortable, it’ll show in the photos.

Patterns can work, but keep them subtle. A floral dress or striped shirt adds personality, but if everyone wears bold prints, it can get distracting. Try mixing a patterned piece with solids for balance.

And don’t forget about shoes and accessories. Barefoot is perfect for the beach, while neutral sandals or boots work well in parks. Accessories like scarves or hats can add personality, but keep them simple so they don’t steal focus.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you feel like yourselves. When you’re comfortable and happy in what you’re wearing, your photos will feel natural, timeless, and true to your family.
